iPhone 3G confirms the rumors - Thinner. Faster. Cheaper.

Apple Bling

After weeks of speculation and rumor-mongering, it’s finally official. iPhone 3G is Apple’s newest mobile phone that takes an already amazing device to a whole new level. Apple listened closely to its customers to come up with a feature-laden offering in an improved form factor that is thinner than its predecessor. It’s faster, thanks to the 3G high-speed network support. And it’s cheaper, with the 8GB model priced at $199 US.

As if that wasn’t enough Apples throws in GPS, the ability to add third-party native applications, and out-of-the-box support for Exchange which thrusts the iPhone into the enterprise. It’s enough to make a lot of companies very nervous at the thought of losing tremendous market share to Apple. RIM’s BlackBerry has been the darling of the enterprise mobile workforce, but the tide may turn towards iPhone. Makers of portable GPS devices must also be worried. And surely Nintendo is sizing up the iPhone 3G’s potential to unseat the DS as the king of handheld gaming.

Friday Roundup for April 4th, 2008 - iPhone tips submitted by you

iPhone drawing

This week’s Friday iPhone tip roundup includes some great advice sent in by the readers of Touchtip. Our post last week about the invites to the EverNote beta was very popular and we still have a few left to give out, just let us know if you want one. Our Playboy post wasn’t so popular, at least not with some of our female readers who felt left out. Honestly, we’d be happy to write up an equivalent post for the ladies, but we can’t find an iPhone app from Playgirl or Chippendales. If you have a suggestion, please share it with us.

Our readers’ tips this week include a very cool way to use your iPhone to send notes to Jott which then get converted to text and sent to your EverNote account. We also find out how to avoid huge roaming charges when using the iPhone outside the U.S., reverse lookup telephone numbers with geolocation, accessing your desktop computer with iPhone or the touch, customizing the icons in the Music app, and how to use an iTunes setting to increase the volume on your mobile device. Read on to get all the details.

iPhone News Roundup - With a rebel yell, Apple cries, “more, more, more!”

Billy Idol

More memory
This big news this week is, of course, the new iPhone and iPod touch models with double the memory for an extra hundred bucks each. But what some sales people may not tell you is that you DO NOT have to extend your contract to upgrade your current device to the one with more memory. The official word from AT&T is that you do have to sign a new contract, but it will be back dated to the original start date of your plan. So don’t let some quota-starved salesperson tell you otherwise. Just get your new iPhone, update your account through iTunes and you’re all set, no contract extension required.

iPhone tip - Use your iPhone’s internet connection with your laptop

Laptop to iPhone connection

Today’s tip shows you how to connect your laptop to the internet using your iPhone’s data connection. Yes, we all know how painfully slow the Edge network can be on your iPhone and it will only be worse on your laptop, but sometimes you need to use apps on your laptop that you just don’t have on your iPhone (yet) and a slow connection is acceptable. You will need SSH on your laptop but since that is platform independent this tip should work on Mac, Linux, or PC.
