Outalot is a new, and free, location-based discovery site specifically designed for iPhone and iPod touch owners who want to be reminded of what’s nearby, or would like to discover new places. The founders of Outalot, Joe Cohen and Jesse Boyes, have domain expertise in location-based services having worked at Vindigo for over four years. Unlike Vindigo’s platform-specific mobile software, Outalot is purely web-based and optimized for the iPhone and iPod touch. Outalot is available to anyone using a web browser, but the city data is currently limited to San Francisco and New York. These test-bed cities will be used to improve the user experience before more cities are added the service.
There are many services, both online and mobile, that work well if you already know where you’re going - that’s more the search paradigm. We wanted a product for location-based discovery and knew others did, too. - Joe Cohen, co-founder of Outalot

There certainly is no shortage of online travel sites and wikis, but there really hasn’t been an iPhone version worth talking about, until now. Schmap is a destination site all about destinations, as in travel destinations, and its new iPhone service is something to write home about. The site offers over 100 city guides for top destinations all across the globe. It also offers local search to help you find something more specific in a geographic location where Schmap may not have a travel guide available. Each city guide includes reviews and photos, historical information, tours, activities, attractions, hotels, restaurants, bars, and much more. Read on to find out why Schmap’s iPhone interface is so slick on the iPhone or iPod touch.

Travelers, listen up, if you own an iPhone or iPod touch and do any kind of traveling whatsoever, you absolutely need to use Tripit. This must-have travel tool is free, and now that it’s optimized for mobile users there is no excuse not to at least give it a try. Tripit is one of those rare tools that is so easy to use that it’s almost transparent when setting up your travel plans, but then it delivers an incredibly valuable view of your itinerary that you will come to depend on during your entire trip. Your Tripit itinerary is a lot more like a personlized travel guide than just a list of what-where-when for your trip. Tripit offers advice and tips for you based on your location and plans, like nearby restaurants, events, and attractions. And Tripit’s new mobile site also supports its “Closeness” feature which is a location-based alert system to let you know when your travel plans overlap with your friends plans. This adds a social networking aspect to a service that was already great to begin with. Read on and learn how to start using Tripit to plan your next trip.

This week’s Friday iPhone tip roundup includes some great advice sent in by the readers of Touchtip. Our post last week about the invites to the EverNote beta was very popular and we still have a few left to give out, just let us know if you want one. Our Playboy post wasn’t so popular, at least not with some of our female readers who felt left out. Honestly, we’d be happy to write up an equivalent post for the ladies, but we can’t find an iPhone app from Playgirl or Chippendales. If you have a suggestion, please share it with us.
Our readers’ tips this week include a very cool way to use your iPhone to send notes to Jott which then get converted to text and sent to your EverNote account. We also find out how to avoid huge roaming charges when using the iPhone outside the U.S., reverse lookup telephone numbers with geolocation, accessing your desktop computer with iPhone or the touch, customizing the icons in the Music app, and how to use an iTunes setting to increase the volume on your mobile device. Read on to get all the details.

We’ve been pretty impressed with the iPhone’s battery life, but still, with battery life there is no such thing as “long enough”. Thank goodness for the new Powerstick mobile device charger which is our new favorite accessory for iPhone and iPod touch. The Powerstick is a universal USB charger that fills with power via any USB device. It provides charging to power deficient mobile devices the same way, just plug it into a USB port and let it transfer the power back into the mobile device. At $69.95 it seems a little pricey just for a charger, but after you dig into the Powerstick’s specs, you’ll realize it’s worth every cent.

Two of the biggest names in online travel planning come to the iPhone and iPod touch. Today, Travelocity announced the iPhone optimized version of their airline flight reservation site, and last month Hotels.com released an iPhone interface for finding and reserving hotel rooms. Both sites are very quick to use and have some handy features making these very worthy of web clips for road warriors and vacationers alike.
