iBricks and Fanboys - It’s Freaky Friday at Apple

ATT Bricked iPhone

Earlier this week, iPhone fanboys rejoiced after securing their place in history with an official fanboy entry in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Perhaps “iBrick” will be the next addition to the dictionary after today’s debacle at the Apple data centers which turned 6 million iPhones into useless, shiny bricks.

Yes, today was supposed to be Steve Jobs’ magnum opus for the iPhone, heralding the release of the iPhone 3G and its revolutionary new mobile operating system, iPhone 2.0. But alas, Gabriel’s trumpet began to play Taps for Apple as reports flooded into Cupertino about new iPhones getting thrown into a loop during the activation process turning them into iBricks.

iPhone 3G confirms the rumors - Thinner. Faster. Cheaper.

Apple Bling

After weeks of speculation and rumor-mongering, it’s finally official. iPhone 3G is Apple’s newest mobile phone that takes an already amazing device to a whole new level. Apple listened closely to its customers to come up with a feature-laden offering in an improved form factor that is thinner than its predecessor. It’s faster, thanks to the 3G high-speed network support. And it’s cheaper, with the 8GB model priced at $199 US.

As if that wasn’t enough Apples throws in GPS, the ability to add third-party native applications, and out-of-the-box support for Exchange which thrusts the iPhone into the enterprise. It’s enough to make a lot of companies very nervous at the thought of losing tremendous market share to Apple. RIM’s BlackBerry has been the darling of the enterprise mobile workforce, but the tide may turn towards iPhone. Makers of portable GPS devices must also be worried. And surely Nintendo is sizing up the iPhone 3G’s potential to unseat the DS as the king of handheld gaming.

New Google Reader beta improves iPhone experience

Google Reader for iPhone

Google has updated its iPhone optimized version of Google Reader making it the absolute best way to read news feeds on the iPhone. You can expect a bevy of native RSS apps to flood the App Store in June, but we think they’ll have a tough time trumping Google’s web-based reader for the iPhone. This week’s update enables mobile users to star items for later reading, and browse large lists of items. These changes bring Google Reader for the iPhone much closer to its sibling app for the desktop web. One really nice new feature is the expanding list that shows you the entire news item within the context of the list so you don’t have to go back and forth between article content and the list view. The new features are still in beta which means users navigating to Google Reader will still see the old version unless you point to the URL to the beta below.
