The iPod touch knocks up a hacky sack and has a baby - meet Chumby

Chumby

The life evolution of iPod touch jumps the track and produces Chumby, the platypus of web-enabled touch devices. Like a forbidden mashup, the unholy communion of the iPod touch and the popular bean-filled footbag has produced a quirky new breed of web-enabled touch devices that make you say WTF as you fall hopelessly in love with its cuddly charm. Chumby is about the size of a cup of coffee and makes a perfect bed mate for your night stand, or even a desk pal at work; always within sight and just a touch away. Chumby’s squishy, Italian leather body features a color touch screen, audio, and built-in Wi-fi all running on a Linux-based operating system with Adobe Flash. Chumby comes loaded with widgets that deliver Flickr photos, weather, stocks, sports scores, news, internet radio, video, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, email, and on and on and on. Heck, you can even play games with Chumby, and not just hacky sack, either. Find out more about Chumby after the jump.

Gmail rocks the iPhone and iPod touch with new features

Google Gmail

Wow. So much Googley goodness this week, it’s making our heads spin. Two days ago Google rolls out a wicked good update to its iPhone and iPod touch interface to make all the Google web apps faster and easier to use for mobile Safari users. This release preceded the Stevenote address at Macworld on Tuesday which included the announcement about this week’s firmware update to 1.1.3 and all the cool features contained within. But as Steve focused all the attention on Apple, Google was sneaking in its own updates to make Gmail the king of email on the iPhone and iPod touch. Here are the Gmail updates you probably don’t know about.

iPhone Gmail now with free IMAP!

Gmail

This week, Google rolled out free IMAP service to all Gmail users, making its web email product the very best of breed. Here is a great tutorial on how to set up Gmail IMAP for iPhone. Geeks already know exactly why this is so incredibly great, but for those of you who don’t know what this means, let us explain. IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) offers true message syncing between an email client and the mail server. This is especially useful if you access your Gmail account from more than one email client, like say, your iPhone and your work or home computer.

Booster shot of productivity, courtesy of Google

Google shot

We’ve mentioned each of these in previous posts, but since the total sum is worth more than each of it’s parts, we’ll wrap them all up here in one post. The suite of web apps that many users affectionately refer to as Google Office (much to Ballmer’s double chin chagrin) is now mostly optimized for iPhone. These apps include Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Reader (rss). We’ve been hearing reports of an optimized version of Google Docs (documents, spreadsheets, presentations) but have yet to see one it materialize. We’ll keep you posted when it happens, or let us know if you see it before we do.

Here’s a handy list of links to the iPhone and iPod touch versions of Google apps.

See where iPhone links are going before tapping them

When in Safari, holding your fingertip down on a link instead of tapping it produces an information balloon that displays the underlying URL. The same thing happens in Mail when you hold a link, which makes this tip much more useful. Now when those “account update e-mails appear, you can press and hold on the link to find out if you’re really going to be taken to the site the e-mail claims.

In Safari, touch and hold your finger tip on a link instead of tapping it. You will see an info balloon pop up containing the URL of the link letting you know where that link is pointing before you go there. You can also do this in iPhone’s Mail. This is very useful in identifying phishing schemes that appear to be from a trusted source but actually point to a different server.

Saving your email messages as drafts

We have heard horror stories from people losing messages after tapping out a nice long email and suddenly, it disappears. There is no obvious way to save email drafts on the iPhone unless, of course, you know the trick. Simply tap the Cancel button. Instead of deleting the message, iPhone will prompt you to Save, Delete, or Cancel. Tap Save and iPhone will drop your message into your Drafts folder. Don’t have a Drafts folder? No worries, iPhone will automatically create one for you. Now you can blog from your iPhone without fear of losing an hour of tapping.

Touchtip brings you all the tips, tricks, hints, and hacks you need to master the Apple iPhone and iPod touch.
