We gotta hand it to Justin Michael for creating a cut-and-paste code snippet that turns Backpack into a must-have app for the iPhone and iPod touch. Adding value to Backpack is not an easy thing to do because its creators, 37signals, have already thought of almost everything to make its collaboration and productivity tool very useful. However, they overlooked users who want to access Backpack from mobile Safari, and that’s where Justin’s iBackpack comes in. You simply paste a snippet of code into a Backpack divider to create a new layout that is optimized for the iPhone and iPod touch. Like Backpack, the code snippet is also free. And if you aren’t already familiar with the award-winning Backpack, go sign up for a free account and give it test drive on your desktop web browser. If you like it as much as we do, drop in the iBackpack tweak and you’re good to go on mobile Safari.

iJailBreak, written by a 13 year old hacker, now works on iPod touch as well as the iPhone for firmware 1.1.4. As a bonus for iPod touch, iJailbreak will also add the “missing” iPhone apps that Apple is charging iPod touch owners twenty bucks for. iJailbreak is super simple to set up. You download the tool, install it, run it, connect your iPhone or iPod touch, then jailbreak. This new version of iJailbreak fixes some of the issues earlier versions had with YouTube, Yahoo Mail, and songs purchased from the iTunes Store. iJailbreak currently runs on intel Macs running Tiger or Leopard. Get the latest download and Jailbreak today.

Simplify Media, the iTunes plugin that lets you share your entire music library over the internet, now works with iPhone and iPod touch. Macworld recently ran a story about hackers and the iPhone. Up until now, most of the iPhone hacks in the news have focused on unlocking and adding third party applications, with almost no coverage given to the potential security holes in the iPhone platform. No doubt that hackers are already working on damaging iPhone attacks just for bragging rights, if no other reason. This threat is compounded by consumer demand that Apple open the iPhone to allow the installation of third party apps, a demand which Steve Jobs has yielded to by promising an SDK early next year.
As iPhone owners, what should we look forward to in 2008? An endless series of firmware updates containing security patches? Or will the iPhone enjoy the same safety record that the Mac desktop has had as compared to the numbers of attacks on Windows computers?
