After weeks of speculation and rumor-mongering, it’s finally official. iPhone 3G is Apple’s newest mobile phone that takes an already amazing device to a whole new level. Apple listened closely to its customers to come up with a feature-laden offering in an improved form factor that is thinner than its predecessor. It’s faster, thanks to the 3G high-speed network support. And it’s cheaper, with the 8GB model priced at $199 US.
As if that wasn’t enough Apples throws in GPS, the ability to add third-party native applications, and out-of-the-box support for Exchange which thrusts the iPhone into the enterprise. It’s enough to make a lot of companies very nervous at the thought of losing tremendous market share to Apple. RIM’s BlackBerry has been the darling of the enterprise mobile workforce, but the tide may turn towards iPhone. Makers of portable GPS devices must also be worried. And surely Nintendo is sizing up the iPhone 3G’s potential to unseat the DS as the king of handheld gaming.

We gotta hand it to Justin Michael for creating a cut-and-paste code snippet that turns Backpack into a must-have app for the iPhone and iPod touch. Adding value to Backpack is not an easy thing to do because its creators, 37signals, have already thought of almost everything to make its collaboration and productivity tool very useful. However, they overlooked users who want to access Backpack from mobile Safari, and that’s where Justin’s iBackpack comes in. You simply paste a snippet of code into a Backpack divider to create a new layout that is optimized for the iPhone and iPod touch. Like Backpack, the code snippet is also free. And if you aren’t already familiar with the award-winning Backpack, go sign up for a free account and give it test drive on your desktop web browser. If you like it as much as we do, drop in the iBackpack tweak and you’re good to go on mobile Safari.

On the surface, Apple’s town hall meeting yesterday introduced the official release of the iPhone SDK, but the event was really much more significant than that. The SDK actually ushers in a new era in mobile computing that will be dominated by Apple’s iPhone platform for the foreseeable future. In June, Apple will push out a new software update for iPhone 2.0 which will support native, third-party applications. This is Jailbreak for the rest of us. New applications will be delivered to consumers through Apple’s App Store, also coming in June, and will be as easy as downloading a podcast in iTunes. But the SDK wasn’t the only announcement to get us excited yesterday. Apple also gave us previews of native applications and new features in iPhone 2.0 to support Outlook Exchange, VoIP, games, and much, much more. Read on to get the run down.

I first met iPhone last July on a blind date. Steve introduced us. He instinctively knew we would hit it off. At that time I was already in a serious office relationship with Blackberry, but iPhone quickly became the Apple of my eye. You could say that I have a fruit fetish.
In the seven months since we met, the honeymoon may be over but the magic is far from gone. Lately, I have noticed changes in iPhone’s behavior. iPhone became lighter on the wallet and seems to remember a lot more things now. On this Valentine’s Day, I sense that we are on the brink of a colossal change that will push our relationship to levels we’ve only dreamt about.
For those of you who brave souls who have dabbled with the infamous Jailbreaks, you already have a taste for what’s in store. Customization, games, Outlook integration, and thousands of applications yet to be invented. iPhone and iPod touch will soon offer all that and much, much more.

Apparently, Yahoo doesn’t give a hoot about the iPhone. In a move as perplexing as the Iranian navy, Yahoo announces Yahoo Go 3.0 which will allow users to add widgets to their cell phones. However, instead of adopting standards-based widgets that will work on the iPhone firmware, or even on Google’s Android operating system, Yahoo opts to support the deeply fractioned mobile markets that are destined for the tar pits in the very near future. Unlike iPhone and Android, Yahoo Go is not an operating system and therefore there is no guarantee for developers in getting distribution of widgets to consumers.
