After weeks of speculation and rumor-mongering, it’s finally official. iPhone 3G is Apple’s newest mobile phone that takes an already amazing device to a whole new level. Apple listened closely to its customers to come up with a feature-laden offering in an improved form factor that is thinner than its predecessor. It’s faster, thanks to the 3G high-speed network support. And it’s cheaper, with the 8GB model priced at $199 US.
As if that wasn’t enough Apples throws in GPS, the ability to add third-party native applications, and out-of-the-box support for Exchange which thrusts the iPhone into the enterprise. It’s enough to make a lot of companies very nervous at the thought of losing tremendous market share to Apple. RIM’s BlackBerry has been the darling of the enterprise mobile workforce, but the tide may turn towards iPhone. Makers of portable GPS devices must also be worried. And surely Nintendo is sizing up the iPhone 3G’s potential to unseat the DS as the king of handheld gaming.

If you do any social networking with your friends or colleagues online, then you know what a pain it is to check all the sites to monitor their activity. You have to go to each site, sign into your account, check the updates. This gets more and more tedious as you connect with more people using different social networks. Enter FriendFeed, a social media aggregator that combines activity from all of your social networks into a single stream. While FriendFeed does not currently have a mobile-friendly version of the service, there are other ways of using it on mobile Safari and we’ll tell you how after the jump.

Outalot is a new, and free, location-based discovery site specifically designed for iPhone and iPod touch owners who want to be reminded of what’s nearby, or would like to discover new places. The founders of Outalot, Joe Cohen and Jesse Boyes, have domain expertise in location-based services having worked at Vindigo for over four years. Unlike Vindigo’s platform-specific mobile software, Outalot is purely web-based and optimized for the iPhone and iPod touch. Outalot is available to anyone using a web browser, but the city data is currently limited to San Francisco and New York. These test-bed cities will be used to improve the user experience before more cities are added the service.
There are many services, both online and mobile, that work well if you already know where you’re going - that’s more the search paradigm. We wanted a product for location-based discovery and knew others did, too. - Joe Cohen, co-founder of Outalot

The release of iPhone 2.0 and the AppStore is just around the corner, and they are certain to bring a flood of amazing new native applications in a broad range of categories. A new class of business applications will emerge, pushing the iPhone further into the enterprise and thus raising the bar for mobile workforce software. However, there will continue to be a market for web-based enterprise software that is optimized for iPhone and iPod touch, largely driven by users who can’t, or won’t, install native iPhone apps. Harvest, the time and expense tracking utility, places itself squarely in this market with its latest release of Harvest for the iPhone. The iPhone version does not have all the features of the desktop version, but it does have the ones you’ll need most when you’re on the go.
