iPhone tip - Use Google Reader’s iPhone interface in your desktop sidebar

Use Google Reader’s iPhone UI in browser sidebar

Last week we told you about the update to Google Reader that brings its iPhone interface closer to its desktop sibling. If you use Google Reader on the iPhone as much as we do, then you’ll probably like this really cool iPhone trick that lets you continue using the iPhone version of Google Reader while using your desktop browser. This fun little trick is great for keeping an eye on your RSS feeds while you continue to work or surf the web in your browser’s main window pane. After the jump, we’ll tell you how to set this up in Firefox since we’re big fans of that browser, although this trick should work in any web browser that has a sidebar feature.

  1. Open the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks/Organize Bookmarks…)
  2. Enter a name, then http://www.google.com/reader/i/ for location, and be sure to check ‘Load this bookmark in the sidebar’.
  3. Now when you select the bookmark, it loads Google Reader in the sidebar (you may have to sign in to Google first).

Now, if you’re really geeky you can customize the look of the Google Reader in your sidebar so that it’s more compact and nicer to look at. Read the tutorial (for Firefox only) from the How-to Geek web site.
