iPhone price drop. One man’s savings is an early adopter’s loss

Steve Jobs hates you

At the Apple media event today, Steve Jobs unexpectedly announced a massive $200 price drop for the iPhone. The 8GB model, priced at $599 at its June 29th debut, now costs 33% less at $399 (the 4GB model has been discontinued but can still be had “while supplies last” for $299).

For those that have been anxiously repressing their iPhone lust, this is probably the best news since the announcement of the device itself (read: those few minutes of glee before the real SJ revealed the original, inflated price tag). Congratulations! It’s your time. Seize it with reckless abandon.

Then there are people like your faithful authors here at Touchtip. We love Apple products. Heck, we love Apple! So, when the iPhone landed, we dug deep into ourselves - and our wallets. We rationalized the irrational. The spousal units reluctantly approved. We had the latest Steve Candy.™

Although we still love our iPhones, we can’t help loving Apple less. We knew about the early adopter tax. We expected a price drop. What we didn’t expect was a 1/3 cut after barely 2 months (translate: “see ya suckers!”).

We know “its just business.” But to be honest, Steve, it makes us feel a little dirty.

PS: The good people at TUAW have posted an excellent list of ways to express your grievances, appropriately titled: Apple screwed you: So now what?
