iPhone hack - Free GPS on the iPhone

Navizon GPS

A new iPhone app, Navizon GPS, is now showing up in the Installer.app. To use this app you will need to register first, but it’s absolutely free and no email is required. After you log in, Navizon GPS will grab your current coordinates and push them over to the Map application by latitude and longitude. This is version 1.0 release and we have heard reports of a few crashing iPhones for some, yet perfect performance for others. Let us know how it works for you.

This is awesome, and just the kind of functionality that needs to be integrated out of the box with the iPhone.

If the next version of the iPhone gets true GPS, then the possibilities get really interesting.

Location-based services for the iPhone could be as revolutionary as multitouch if they get widely adopted. Take a look at this:

I just tried it with the latest version of iTunes (7.4.2 I think) on Mac OSX with a 4GB iPhone running 1.02 firmware. Installer.app installed just fine, ad did the Navigation software. It took a few tries to register with their site (kept saying server was down). When I finally clicked the Locate button in Navizon I was told “Unable to Locate. Your location could not be identified. No known Cells or WiFi nodes in range.” I’m in the small town of Hood River, OR (97031). AT&T reception shows 5 bars.
