By now, you must have heard of iPhone Ocarina, the incredibly tasty iPhone app that turns your iPhone into a wind instrument. It’s a delight to play and joy to listen to, especially if it’s in the hands of someone with real musical talent. Ever since the Ocarina’s appearance in the App Store a few weeks ago, players of this fascinating instrument have been lighting up YouTube with musical videos.
This Contest Blows
The Ocarina has already claimed one of the top spots in the App Store for downloads due to its viral, and almost magical nature. The app has been a huge success for its creators, the Sonic Mule, and now they’d like to pay it forward. The quirky and funny Smule team has just announced a throw down, “This Contest Blows“, a chance for Ocarina minstrels to show off their goods on YouTube and win $1,000. There are ten grand prizes and loads of t-shirts to win. This will be a fun contest to watch as people all over the world give it their best shot in a contest that could be billed as Ocarina Idol. Don’t think you can win? Think again.
How to Enter
- Make a video featuring the iPhone Ocarina
- Post your video as a response to the video above (on YouTube, not here at Touchitp), or post it in the contest’s YouTube group
- Go to contest web site and submit an entry form
Contest entries must be submitted by midnight on January 10th, 2009.
How Will Winners Be Decided?
Winners will be determined by a Smulean algorithm, combining number of ratings, average number of stars, and total number of views on YouTube. Smule will also be appointing a panel of judges to oversee the contest and they will have the ultimate decisive authority if needed. — Smule’s Contest Website
So there you have it from the horses, er, the Smule’s mouth. Win over the audience at YouTube and you could take home the bacon, and as we all know full well, gaining popularity on YouTube isn’t always about talent. Be creative, be interesting, and be sure to read the official rules before laying down your magnum opus. You can also use Smule’s Ocarina sheet music site to bone up on your mad skills or learn how to play songs.
