Dailymotion delivers video to iPhone’s Safari
Dailymotion, a European competitor to YouTube, has figured out a clever way to deliver web video to the iPhone without using the YouTube application. Dailymotion videos are specially encoded for Quicktime, unlike the YouTube videos which require the still absent Adobe Flash. This allows streaming video to play right inside Safari. Dailymotion’s interface is very intuitive and will feel natural to any iPod owner.

I agree that the European competitor Dailymotion has some things going for it that YouTube doesn’t; but I am hoping I’m not the only one who is troubled with the site “lagging” on every reorientation zoom, and “click”. I’m using a 1st generation iPod Touch bought in Nov. 2007, with the first paid-for upgrade ver. 1.5 also offered in Nov 2007. When I reach the homepage, there is usually a 40-50 sec. load time. Whenever I go to a video link or “My channel” there is about an equal load time. My connection is decently quick, so I’m prone to believe its not my ISP because this doesn’t happen at any other site for the exception of NBC’s horrible homepage (which by the way redirects anyone using a mobile browser device like an iPhone or iPod Touch to a mobile site that never allows the user to go back to the original website). The problem is especially apparent when you pinch or expand the page, whether or not there is a single video or many within the page. If anyone has tips or fixes to the side effects of using a iPod or iPhone, please respond by posting on the Touchtip forums or starting a new thread named “dailymotion lag”.
