Topple - If you buy only one iPhone game, this is it!
The makers of Topple tout this iPhone game as “the most addictive stacking game ever”, which is almost true. In fact, Topple could actually be the most addictive game of any kind ever, especially for iPhone and iPod touch games. Topple is just plain crazy fun with unlimited replay value that will keep the iPhone in your hands for longer than any other casual game available in the App Store today.
Topple is like a cross between Tetris and Jenga with curiously funny, animated characters for blocks. Like Jenga, the object of the game is to see how high you can stack the blocks. And like Tetris, you can rotate the blocks and move them into place on your stack. The real kicker here is that Topple uses the iPhone’s accelerometer to detect the tilt. This means you can use the angle of your iPhone to sway the teetering tower as you continue to stack it higher.
The animation is top-notch, giving each block a unique personality. The characterizations are funny, yet functional in that their facial expressions can yield clues about which way to tilt your iPhone, or which part of the stack you need to place the next block. You drag, rotate, and stack pieces using the iPhone’s multi-touch interface. The game gets increasingly challenging as you move up in levels.
Topple combines unique gameplay along with a sweeping musical score to produce a masterpiece of iPhone gaming. Topple belongs on the top of your stack of iPhone games to buy. It’s a great game, and worth the 99 cents (or even more), but if you were to buy only *one* game…Topple isn’t it. Spore Origins is.
I’d have to disagree about Spore Origins being the *one* game. Although I had high hopes, I found it limited and boring - clearly a crippled version of the PC experience.
At least Topple is an original concept that is fully realized on the device.
I love tilting in order to keep the tower erect. It’s something I wouldn’t have ever thought of, but also something I couldn’t imagine the game without.
