Steve Jobs confirms native 3rd party apps for iPhone & iPod touch

Steve jobs

Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February.

That’s the first line from a note posted in Apple’s Hot News by the Steve himself. Looks like the app community for our beloved ‘touches is about to get a lot more interesting.

Um… I’m confused that Steve Jobs would say this. “Native third party” is a contradiction. A native app is by definition not third party. I don’t get it.

    There is no contradiction here.

“Third party” refers to an app that is not developed by (in this case) Apple and/or not part of the base installation.

“Native” simply refers to a compiled app that *installs and runs* natively/locally on the system (not a web app that is only accessible via a network on Safari).

Steve is saying that Apple wants third parties to develop applications that you can install on the iPhone and ‘touch.
