Rolando is the greatest iPhone game so far!

Rolando

The wait is finally over. Rolandoicon, the iPhone game from the makers of Topple, has finally been released in the App Store.

Unlike other iPhone games such as Brothers in Arms and Sim City, Rolando is not just a port of a game from another platform. Rolando was designed specifically for the iPhone and iPod touch, and boy does it show. The game features luscious and bright graphics in a 2D illustrative style that looks gorgeous on the high resolution displays of the iPhone and iPod touch. The innovative controls take full advantage of the touch screen interface, also utilizing the accelerometer for tilt input. The result is an iPhone game that feels completely natural and plays like a dream.

Rolandos

The goal of Rolando is simple; safely guide a group of round characters, called Rolandos (‘natch) through maze-like environments without losing any Rolandos. The interactive environments contain all kinds of gizmos that you’ll need to manipulate with your fingers or the tilt control, in order to move your Rolandos to safety. You’ll find levers and lifts, gates and turnstiles, trampolines, elevators, catapults, bombs, and other whimsical doo-dads that can either help you, or be obstacles in your quest to the finish. The physics are spot-on and make the gameplay a total blast play.

Rolando features 36 levels that span across four unique worlds. The rich, visual style of the game comes from renowned illustrator, Mikko Walamies, while the pulsing beats and rhythms were produced by British DJ, Mr. Scruff.

Rolando is priced at $9.99 which is certainly at the high end for iPhone games, yet this one is worth every penny. Rolando’s creators, ngmoco, was founded for the sole purposed of designing iPhone games. Clearly, this shows the kind of quality that can be produced when a company focuses on a single platform. Rolando is the latest in a string of wonderful ngmoco games like Dr. Awesome, and the fantastic Topple, a game that won our hearts earlier this year.

It’s no surprise that Rolando is getting a whopping 4.5 star rating in the App Store. This is a great game that showcases the potential of the iPhone and iPod touch as a serious gaming platform. The $9.99 price may seem steep, but compared to the price of games for the PSP or Nintendo DS, it’s a downright steal. Trust us, go get this game now.
