Our favorite iPhone fetish accessory – Myvu’s Crystal video headset

There have been precious few iPhone products that exude opulence and excess as much as the I Am Rich iPhone app that was banned from the App Store. It was selling for $1,000 and aside from letting the people around you know that you have money to burn, the app didn’t do a damn thing. As if that wasn’t enough to show off your haute-ness, you’ll soon be able to drop a few grand to give your iPhone the 24 karat treatment so it’ll match your crunk teeth, or you can even deck it out with diamonds if you’ve got forty G’s to blow.
Now comes along the Myvu Crystal video headset, a decadent iPhone accessory that is so useful that we could actually justify the cost. The $300 price tag is a drop in the bucket compared the fetish items listed above. The Myvu Crystal iPod edition is a wearable video display designed specifically iPhone and iPod touch. The slim and sleek design is stylish, perfect for commuting, and puts a virtual 30″ LCD display right in front of you.

The Crystal headset from Myvu represents the latest in wearable video technology from Microoptical. The company, which has developed optical applications for medicine and the military, has now put this technology in a line of consumer products including the Crystal. And unlike most other video headsets that have a geeky form factor, the Crystal features styling that looks more like designer sunglasses rather than Lt. Forge’s visor on Star Trek.
The Crystal weighs in at a very light 3 ounces, making it very easy to wear for long periods. The optics are crystal-clear with bright colors and definition. The video output is a sharp, 640×480 pixel resolution (VGA). The aspect ratio is limited to 4:3 which means you’ll see letterboxing for videos that are corrected for widescreen displays. In addition to the iPhone and iPod touch adapter, the Crystal can be connect to any composite video source. This means you can use this headset to watch video from portable DVD players or other devices.
The headset also features integrated, canalbud ear pieces. It comes with a variety of earbud tips to fit most ears. The earbuds are soft, comfortable, and shut out ambient sound.
The Crystal headset requires its own power source, a rechargeable lithium-polymer battery that is good for about 4 hours of video viewing on a full charge. The battery is recharged through a USB cable which has an integrated remote for adjusting brightness and contrast.
Another great feature of the Crystal are the lens optics that allow you to slightly see through the lenses. This provides situational awareness so someone can’t sneak up on you while you’re watching video. The headset also comes with two pairs of lenses, one in black and the other in amber. The black lenses filter out more light than the amber lenses, making them more suitable for viewing in low light, or in situations where you don’t need as much see-though ability. Perfect for the airplane.
The Crystal iPod edition from myvu provides high quality video and in a package that is both comfortable and stylish. If you want privacy while watching videos on your iPhone or iPod touch, you can’t go wrong with the Crystal. At $300, this accessory qualifies for a place on our iPhone fetish list, and should be on your holiday wish list this year.
