iPhone and me? We’ve only just begun

iPhone heart

I first met iPhone last July on a blind date. Steve introduced us. He instinctively knew we would hit it off. At that time I was already in a serious office relationship with Blackberry, but iPhone quickly became the Apple of my eye. You could say that I have a fruit fetish.

In the seven months since we met, the honeymoon may be over but the magic is far from gone. Lately, I have noticed changes in iPhone’s behavior. iPhone became lighter on the wallet and seems to remember a lot more things now. On this Valentine’s Day, I sense that we are on the brink of a colossal change that will push our relationship to levels we’ve only dreamt about.

For those of you who brave souls who have dabbled with the infamous Jailbreaks, you already have a taste for what’s in store. Customization, games, Outlook integration, and thousands of applications yet to be invented. iPhone and iPod touch will soon offer all that and much, much more.

Apple has announced a ‘live event’ on February 26th which will herald the era of official iPhone development for 3rd party software. This is the day that Apple’s software developer’s kit will be available to anyone wishing to create something new for the iPhone. Judging from the activity thus far of ‘non-official’ iPhone software for Jailbroken iPhones, we can expect a whole lot more after the 26th.

This is an exciting time for the iPhone and iPod touch. Soon we’ll all be able to do new things with our mobile devices from Apple. Will we finally be able to record video with the iPhone camera? Will iPhone support Flash? Will we be able to connect to our office networks and use Outlook Exchange as seamlessly as Blackberry does? What games will we be able to play? And what about voice over IP software which will enable super low cost telephony? Can Apple allow it without angering AT&T?

Fortunately, answers to our questions lay just ahead of us. And although our days of speculation will soon end, we suspect this is merely the dawn of a new chapter in our relationship with iPhone. iPhone and me? We’ve only just begun.

I was wondering if there is a way to jailbreak my iTouch which already has 1.1.3 firmware and has not been Jailbroken at all at any version.

I started with 1.1.2 fireware today and follow all of the instructions on lifehacker.com until the last step where I couldn’t find the 1.1.3 software upgrader on my installer, so I stupidly thought I should just upgrade to 1.1.3 through iTunes. Well, that’s not the way. Since now I have 1.1.3 and no more installer on my iTouch.

I searched online to see if there is a way to jailbreak it again straight from 1.1.3 without having any previous jailbroken versions and didn’t find any. Do you know any?

I also tried to downgrade again from 1.1.3 to 1.1.1 but I keep getting an error and I cannot fix it. Do you know if I need to downgrade to 1.1.2 first? If so, where can I find the firmware file for that as I couldn’t find it on Apple.

thanks a lot. Hope you can help. The jailbroken version looks very cool

@Lei - Here is an article about the most recent Jailbreak for iPhone 1.1.3 but it doesn’t work for iPod touch, yet. Supposedly, they are working on it so you might want to watch that page for updates.

Here is a step-by-step guide to downgrade from 1.1.3 to 1.1.1 however, the process is not for the faint of heart.

On Feb 26th Apple will release the SDK which means loads of 3rd party apps will be available for both the iPhone and iPod touch, and the no-risk installation of these through iTunes means no worries of messing up your device or its warranty. It may be wise just to hang tight for a couple weeks instead of trying to hack your touch now.

Are the third party apps off iTunes or wherever going to be free when the SDK comes out?

@isbort - Some will be free, some will be pay for apps.

    Thanks.
