Instant messages, free SMS, and social networking with Yahoo’s oneConnect

Just a single week after declaring our affection for Yahoo’s Search for iPhone, Yahoo throws a little more love our way with oneConnect, a polished communication app that combines SMS, social networking, and instant messaging. oneConnect is like an IM client gone wild. You can send instant messages to your contacts on Yahoo or AIM. Or, you can send messages through the SMS protocol which is great, especially if your contacts aren’t using an IM client and just want to receive text messages on their mobile device. And here’s the best part, if you’re on wi-fi the text messages you send through oneConnect won’t take away from the paltry SMS included in your data plan. That’s right, free SMS all day, all night. And as if that wasn’t good enough for us, Yahoo throws in a feature called Pulse that it aggregates your messages across a virual boat load of social networking services like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, Bebo, Flickr, YouTube, and many more.
Think of oneContact as a social address book, of sorts. It gives you access to the contacts on your iPhone or iPod touch, as well as your contacts in the Yahoo Address Book and your social networks. You simply select a contact, then choose to send them a message via SMS or instant message. You can also use oneConnect to monitor your friends’ activity on supported social networks in a single view. This is similar to FriendFeed, the web-based application that aggregates your social netowrk activity into a single view. FriendFeed does have an iPhone version of their popular service, but since oneConnect is a native iPhone app you’ll experience better performance. Not to mention the SMS, IM, and address book features that FriendFeed does not offer.
oneConnect is a very slick iPhone app that sports a clean, easy-to-use interface. You can customize your messages with photos, avatars, and emoticons. The social networking aspect of the app makes using it unlike any other communication app. With oneConnect, Yahoo delivers a powerful and unique communication tool that is a must-have for any iPhone or iPod touch owner.
oneConnect is available as a free download through the App Store, but requires a Yahoo account in order to use it.

yahoo OneConnect is blocked for users in Canada.
Its also currently blocked in the UK too, I would guess it will be linked to support from mobile carriers here

if oneconnect will be available for all parts of the world, that will be great for us social media addicts and it will also be easier to maintain social networking sites even if we are away from our computers. simply put, it will add more ease and flexibility to us. would love to see this application improved someday! =)
