Gather ’round the Campfire to chat on iPhone and iPod touch

Campfire, the group chat web application, arrives in style on iPhone and iPod touch. Campfire is part of a suite of award-winning web 2.0 apps from 37signals, the developers of business productivity and collaboration tools such as Basecamp, Backpack, and Highrise. Campfire is a real-time chat application that is kind of like instant messaging, but more targeted to groups, especially remote teams. Now you can interact with your team members using Campfire from any web browser, including mobile Safari on iPhone and iPod touch.
In this age of telecommuting, it is essential to have tools to enable communication and efficiency among disperse team members. Campfire allows groups (of up to 60) to interact with each other with chat and file sharing. You can also use Campfire to share images and code making this an ideal way for web developers to collaborate on projects internally, or with clients and vendors. Campfire is available as a free service, or as a paid subscription which come with enhanced features.
Instant messaging is great for one-on-one conversations, but falls short if you need to have group chats because some IM services just don’t offer that functionality from one network to another. If you are on AIM, for instance, and you have other team mates on Skype or MSN, you won’t be able to set up a chat room in your instant messaging client unless you are all on the same network.
Campfire chat rooms can be set up very quickly and are password protected for privacy. You can specify who gets access to which rooms. Paid accounts offer encryption for even more security.
In a nutshell, Campfire outshines instant messaging for online group collaboration. Since it is web-based, Campfire doesn’t depend on any specific IM network, and it requires no installation and zero IT support. If you are already using Basecamp for project management, you will immediately benefit from the integration of Campfire into Basecamp. And now that it’s optimized for iPhone and iPod touch, you can be remote and mobile without any project downtime between you and your team.
Sign up for a free Campfire account and make your remote team more productive. To access Campfire on the iPhone, just point mobile Safari to your landing page after creating an account, and you will automatically be directed to the iPhone version of Campfire.

I doubt that it will actually make my team more productive. It feels like they are going to spend more time on chatting and not working. All I need my team to do is to work and be aware of the progress of others. We’re using Wrike [http://www.wrike.com] for project management and it’s all we need. We’re getting e-mail notifications from Wrike to our smartphones and Blackberries(It’s kind of funny none of us has an iPhone yet :)) and we’re always in the loop.
