Some of you might recall Touchtip telling you about FlyCast earlier this year, an iPhone web app that streams digital music radio. This week, FlyTunes became FlyCast Mobile and is now available for free in the App Store. And since its launch last January, the FlyCast channel guide has grown from 80 channels to over 1,000 digital channels!
The channels offered by FlyCast are categorized by genre so you can easily find something to fit your listening mood. In addition to all the usual music genres such as alternative, country, jazz, etc., the list also offers sports, technology, talk radio, kids, spirituality, weather and many, many more. You can also select channels by U.S. cities. The selection is both broad and deep, ensuring anyone can find something to fit their tastes.
The FlyCast iPhone application is packed with great features like the ability to pause live broadcasts. On select webcasts you can skip songs altogether, and a “Top of the Hour” feature lets latecomers to talk radio shows the option to listen to the beginning of the show. Our favorite feature is “StreamAhead” that basically caches the stream so you can continue listening even during extended periods when you are not connected to the network.
The app also includes an embedded web browser, radio pre-sets, search, battery saver mode, and links to download songs in iTunes. Overall, FlyCast is an excellent addition to your app collection, and unlike satellite radio, it’s absolutely free. It works really well on 3G or wi-fi, although the channel list does list channels that are optimized for low-bandwidth listening on EDGE.
