Flight Control iPhone Game, You Are Cleared for Take Off [review]

Earlier this month, iPhone app developer Firemint released their newest game for iPhone and iPod touch, Flight Control. We almost wished we hadn’t tried this game; it’s crazy fun but frighteningly addictive. You could burn a lot of hours on this game without even realizing it. With simple gameplay, intuitive touch controls, and boiling frog difficulty as you advance, Flight Control manages to find that perfect blend of qualities that make for a great casual game.
Flight Control’s premise is simple. You command an airport with two runways and one helipad. As air vehicles approach the airport, it’s your duty to direct them to their proper landing strip. You know which strip is the correct one for the vehicle because they are color coded. You direct each one by swiping your finger from the aircraft to its landing area to create a path which won’t cause any mid-air collisions.
Seems pretty simple, no? It is, and that’s what makes this game so approachable. Almost anyone can pick it up and start playing with no instruction at all. However, the game soon becomes more and more challenging as more aircraft approach your airport looking to land. The aircraft are different sizes and have different speeds which makes the air traffic control increasingly difficult. You’ll find yourself playing this game over and over and over again, saying to yourself, “okay, just one more time” as you try to beat your previous score.
Flight Control features beautiful graphics and sound, but the real star here is the game play. It’s terrific. Our only gripe is that it comes with just a single map and four aircraft types. Yet, for a mere .99 cents we really can’t complain. This game is an excellent candidate to take advantage of iPhone 3.0′s upcoming feature for downloadable content (DLC). We’d gladly pay extra for more maps and aircrafts.
That said, you can’t buy more fun for just a buck. We highly recommend this game. Go get it now if you haven’t already tried it.
