The creators of SiteHoppin’ know that except for ice cream, beer makes just about everything better, and that includes the web. It’s tough to disagree with that, especially after using SiteHoppin’ on our iPhones and iPod touches. SiteHoppin’ lets you quickly discover new, interesting web sites with minimal typing and tapping, which we presume, allows more time for drinking beer.
SiteHoppin’ is a close cousin of StumbleUpon, letting you move from site to site based on your preferences. Like StumbleUpon, you can rate rate sites but instead of a five star scale SiteHoppin’ uses, yes you guessed it, a beer scale. The more beers the better. However, unlike it’s popular cousin, SiteHoppin’ is tailor-made for mobile Safari.
SiteHoppin’ features a persistent menu bar at the top which allows you to set a topic for what kind of sites you want to hop. You select your topic then select “Iterate” or “Shuffle”. The Iterate option will display the sites from your tag category to you in alphabetical order. Shuffle will display a random site to you from the tag category of your choice. If you select “All” then you will be hopping sites from random tags. You can tag sites with your own tags as well, then use your own tags to hop later.
Each site has a beer rating from one to five bottles. You submit your rating for a site which contributes to the overall score from all users. You can tag new sites or see comments from other users about any given site. You can also view the most popular sites from an option in the main menu.
One of the most unique features of SiteHoppin’ is its “Beer Advertising Program” which lets site owners promote their own sites by using “Beer Credits”. You earn credits by hopping and tagging sites, rating them, commenting, and just plain participating with SiteHoppin’.
If you really want to get some beer drinking done while you surf, turn on the “Slideshow Mode” which will automatically hop you from site to site in five second intervals. In this mode, no tapping is required at all, making this more like watching TV with a cold beer. You can also change the time setting to hop faster or slower depending on your ability to read a site. The more beers you drink the slower you’ll probably want to hop.
The site’s creator wasn’t kidding when he says a “beer algorithm” is used to select which site is actually displayed to you at any given time. We believe him after seeing a web site about marketing tactics and a soccer site show up under the “Animals” tag. But hey, after a few beers it doesn’t really matter anyways.
Now go grab a brew, kick back and start SiteHoppin’.
