Evernote - note application for iPhone and iPod touch

Not long ago, we introduced you to Evernote, a killer application that syncs your notes between your desktop and your iPhone without any Jailbreak or hacking required. This week, Evernote released a significant upgrade that transforms an already wonderful tool into a must-have for any iPhone or iPod touch owner. The iPhone’s lack of a decent notes application has left most of us scrambling for little workarounds or hacks just to get notes from our devices back to our computer. Evernote accomplishes this feat quite nicely, but honestly, it’s all the other features of Evernote that mitake it absolutely invaluable. We use Evernote every single day and depend heavily on it for the bulk of our writing and research. Evernote excels in the capturing and organization of ideas, and it works for desktop, web, and mobile. Unfortunately, the product is only available in a private beta, but the kind folks at Evernote have given us another pile of invites for our Touchtip readers. Read on to find out more about the newest features Evernote has to offer and how you can get your greedy little hands on an invite to the beta. And if you have already had the chance to try out Evernote, let us know how you like it so far.

About sixty Touchtip readers are already part of the beta group for Evernote. The software’s creators have taken much of the feedback from beta users to improve the product. This latest release of Evernote brings together a package of great enhancements to both the web app and the desktop client versions.

  • Encryption on Mac and Windows
  • On Mac: Spotlight integration, new note views, drag-n-drop for multiple filetypes
  • On Windows: Faster searching, improved stability, synchronization through password-protected proxies
  • On the web: Ability to select multiple notes at once for easier moving, tagging, and deletion, faster search, improved browser support
  • Service update: Tons of new hardware to make sure you have the best experience possible

Evernote installs as a desktop client for both Mac and PC where you can create, edit, or delete notes. Your Evernote account comes with web-based access so the desktop client is not required to use Evernote. You can organize notes into groups called “notebooks”, and you can organize them even more with tags. We found that just putting all of our notes into a single notebook using tags to organize them works just fine for us.

By default, notebooks are private, but you can choose to publish them so that they are viewable by other users, including search engines. You can also easily share individual notes with others. And anytime you add a note to either the desktop client or the web app, Evernote will automatically sync it to the other. This works a no-brainer backup system for your notes, you can access them from anywhere including your iPhone or iPod touch, and you never need to remember to save periodically because edits are saved as you make them.

Evernote also features powerful clipping tools that allow you to add notes and images from web pages by simply highlighting what you want to clip, then using a key command or menu pull down to send them right into your notebook. Clipped items are appended with the URL of the source so you can reference that site later, if needed.

All text, audio, and images are instantly searchable so you can quickly find what you need. Did we say images are searchable? We did, and this is one of Evernote’s greatest assets; the ability to search for text within images. It’s like magic and it enables you to do some interesting things using images to remember things such as creating a database of purchase receipts by taking pictures of them and sending them to Evernote. This feature is a perfect fit for the iPhone’s camera. Simply take a picture, then email it to your Evernote account. It will be added to your web notebook, then auto synced to your desktop client if you use one. This is simply awesome. And iPod touch users can use any cell phone camera to accomplish the same thing.

    This sounds very exciting. The lack of a copy, cut, and paste ability has really limited the possibility of my touch as a serious writing instrument. Also, having thousands of photos and no way to incorporate them — let alone actually search them — is beyond my wildest imagings and hopes of possibilities.
