Auto-Tune Your Voice on iPhone, Sing Just Like T-Pain [review]

I Am T-Pain, iPhone app from Smule

We thought we heard the last of auto-tune when Britney Spears’ career nose dove into the trailer park, but it’s been making a huge comeback. Auto-tune is not just as a crutch for tone deaf singers anymore, it has become a bona-fide recording tool for serious artists who treat it like an instrument. Even mega stars who have perfect pitch vocals are now sprinkling their tracks with Auto-Tune to give their songs a retro sound. Rapper T-Pain uses auto-tune on just about every note he sings, giving him that signature sound. Now you can have that sound, too, with the amazing new iPhone app called I Am T-Painicon, brought to you by Smule and you guessed it, T-Pain.

You might recall Smule, the company of musical software geniuses behind phenomenal iPhone apps like Ocarinaicon and Leaf Tromboneicon. For this new app, Smule has partnered with Antares, the creators of Auto-Tune, to deliver an interactive karaoke-style iPhone app that auto-tunes your voice on-the-fly while you are singing. You select background beats from T-Pain and sing into the iPhone’s microphone. I Am T-Pain works its magic and you’ll come out the speaker singing like a pro. The effect is almost magical, especially if you can’t sing. You can record and save your songs, then share them with your friends. This app is incredibly entertaining and one you’ll definitely want to share with your friends.

I Am T-Pain comes with hit music you can sing along to, or you can go freestyle with three original beats from Nappy Boy. T-Pain hits include Bartender, Kiss Kiss, I’m Sprung, I’m N Luv (Wit a Stripper), and Dreamgirl. You can also download additional premium tracks by T-Pain and other hip hop superstars, for the standard iTunes price of .99 cents per tune.

The Auto-Tune used by I Am T-Pain is the real deal; it’s the same pitch correction technology used in recording studios around the world. The only difference now is that you can have it in your pocket for a mere $2.99 instead of shelling out hundreds of dollars for the studio versions. It’s really amazing that Smule was able to put Auto-Tune on the iPhone in the first place. And it works in realtime so you don’t have to lay down a recording first before applying the effects, just sing along the app does the rest.

If you choose a track that has lyrics, I Am T-Pain will only play the music while displaying the lyrics for you just like karaoke. The app also features tuning options where you can choose from four presets, select the scale of the voice pitch, or change the octave. You can even turn off auto-tune so you can have only select parts of your song pitch corrected while the rest remains untouched.

Like all the iPhone apps from Smule, I Am T-Pain has built-in social networking features that allow you to share your recorded tracks with your friends. You can upload your performance to your Facebook wall or MySpace page, or you can email them to your friends. I Am T-Pain is compatible with iPhone and 2nd generation iPod touch.

WHY is I Am T-Pain only for iPhone. Why wasn’t it developed for iPod Touch as well, and will it be in the future?? I want this app for my 2nd-gen Touch!!

@MacBernac – This app IS supported by 2nd generation iPod touch as well as iPhone, so go get it and start singing!

I have an ipod touch 2nd generation. I just bought an external mic and I’m unable to hear the backgrounds, the auto-tuned version of my voice, or the playbacks. The only way I can hear the recording is to freestyle and send it to my own email address. Looks like I’m going to have to shell out another $30 on the headphones with mic. :(

If I do this, is this app finally going to work like it’s supposed to?
