App Store’s free Instapaper app - a must-have utility

Instapaper - Bookmarking App for iPhone and iPod touch

We already told you about Instapaper, the magnificent bookmarking web app that you can use from your desktop browser or on your iPhone or iPod touch. As you browse the web and find content you don’t have time to read, but want to save it for reading later, you simply tap a bookmarklet to send it to your Instapaper account where it will be saved for easy access later. You can access all your saved items from any web browser making it easy to flag web pages from your desktop, then read them later when you’re on the go.

Using your browser’s bookmark manager for this purpose is clumsy, and now that Instapaper has a free, native app available in the App Store, iPod touch owners can rejoice. Why? The Instapaper native app will not only save your bookmarks, but also save the actual content so you can read them off line. This is great for iPod touches that don’t always have access to wi-fi, but it’s also great for iPhone owners that travel on airplanes, or venture to locations that have spotty cellular coverage.

The Instapaper native app also let’s you view your saved content in two different ways, a web view which looks like the web page with images and all, or a text-only view that is loads lightning fast. Even though the web view contains images, Instapaper further optimized the page for faster performance by compressing the images and stripping javascript out of the pages which removes advertising. Very nice.

For iPhone and iPod touch, Instapaper beats the socks off of Delicious or any other bookmarking service. It’s a small download (0.1 MB) and it is absolutely free. Go get it now.

This is an absolute lifesaver. I have a touch, and constantly lose content when I leave wi-fi, and a ton of the features are rendered totally useless. Thanks for highlighting this!

The 1.2 “update” seems to have downgraded the app so you are unable to view full web pages with images; You are now forced to read text-only, and the full page feature will be available for those who purchase Instapaper “Pro”. Bummer– such a tease!

I think I’ll wait for a proper PDF reader.
