Rumor round up - Apple hires new team for the new Newton, iPhones cut in line

Apple’s New Newton

Something’s happening at Apple. Their company stock rose above $200 per share for the first time this week amid rumors that over 5 million iPhones have already been sold. Steve Jobs set a goal to sell 10 million units by the end of next year which means they are halfway there in only six months. Did you get one in your stocking this year?

Apple also seems to be hiring an entire engineering team specifically for multi-touch. Could this be for the new Newton, an ultra-mobile multi-touch tablet coming the second half of 2008? If so, you may not have to wait in line for one if Apple gets granted this new patent which would allow iPhone owners to cut in line at participating stores. Sure, you’ll be able to get in an out of Starbucks much faster, but that’ll mean less time buying music at iTunes while you wait for your latte.

With Quicken Online, the iPhone is so money

Quicken Online for iPhone

There is a new breed of personal financial management applications that don’t require you to be an accountant in order use them. Sites like Wasabe and Mint are targeted to younger people that don’t need advanced features and are just looking for an easy-to-use system to view and manage their finances while getting advice along the way. Both of these web apps are great in their own way, but each lack mobile access for iPhone and iPod touch. On January 8th, Intuit comes to the rescue with the release of Qucken Online, a simplified version of their desktop software that features an optimized interface for the iPhone.

iPhone and iPod touch helping doctors help you

iPhone doctors

We knew we should have listened to our mothers and became doctors instead of web developers. At least we’d spend more time using these cool iPhone tools to improve patient care instead of surfing YouTube all day. These three new medical applications indicate that the iPhone and iPod touch are starting to make their way into doctors’ offices and hospitals.

Will malicious hackers target the iPhone in 2008?

Macworld recently ran a story about hackers and the iPhone. Up until now, most of the iPhone hacks in the news have focused on unlocking and adding third party applications, with almost no coverage given to the potential security holes in the iPhone platform. No doubt that hackers are already working on damaging iPhone attacks just for bragging rights, if no other reason. This threat is compounded by consumer demand that Apple open the iPhone to allow the installation of third party apps, a demand which Steve Jobs has yielded to by promising an SDK early next year.

As iPhone owners, what should we look forward to in 2008? An endless series of firmware updates containing security patches? Or will the iPhone enjoy the same safety record that the Mac desktop has had as compared to the numbers of attacks on Windows computers?

Picassa Web

Google is at it again. After quietly releasing a new iPhone optimized version of its home page and core services, today they release an iPhone and iPod touch version of Picassa Web, the photo management tool.
