Unlocked iPhones - the iPhone for the rest of us

It has been a very busy week for iPhone hackers. All week long we have heard numerous reports of hackers unlocking the iPhone so it can be used on any network. This has AT&T worried sick about losing profits. How concerned is Apple? Probably not much. Sure, contractually AT&T must pay Apple a commission for each iPhone plan they sell, and less plans means less commission for Apple. But Apple may stand to make a lot more money when consumers learn they can buy an iPhone and use it on their current plan regardless of the network. Even legal threats against these iPhone hackers are most likely all in vain for AT&T and Apple. This BusinessWeek article explains the legal arguments and concludes that for once, the law may side in favor of the hackers.

Save battery power with low light mode

The iPhone has a hidden light sensor located just above the ear piece. If this sensor detects low lighting, it will put the phone into a dim-light display mode. More light in the room will cause the iPhone to go into a full brightness mode. Use this sensor to your advantage by covering the sensor as you unlock the iPhone. This will put the iPhone into a low light mode saving you battery power. You can also do this manually in the iPhone settings, but it takes a lot longer to tap and navigate to the brightness slider in the iPhone’s settings.

Type punctuation using a single finger stroke

So here’s what you can do, all in one motion:

1. Touch the “.123″ key, but don’t lift your finger as the punctuation layout appears.

2. Slide your finger a half inch onto the period or comma key, and release.

The ABC layout returns automatically. You’ve typed a period or a comma with one finger touch instead of three. In fact, you can type ANY of the punctuation symbols the same way.
